About Our SchoolAbout Our School

Phase One of the present school was opened in 1981 by the Right Honourable YAB Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, Chief Minister of Sarawak, and phase Two in 1984. The school is situated at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Kuching. It comprises of 9 classrooms, a multipurpose hall, a kitchen for the cookery class, a book library, a toy library, a sensory room and office. The school has 3 vans for bringing the children  to school for taking them on school outings, shopping trips and educational trips.

Each class in PERKATA has one teacher and at least one assistant with a maximum of 17 children.

Children attending PERKATA come from various intellectually disabled groups: Downs Syndrome, autism and various types of brain damage; additional problems such as physical handicap, hearing/speech impairment and behaviourial problems are also present.

Most likely, there are children in the Kuching district who are having similar problems but who do not yet attend our school, but it is heartening to note that many more parents are coming forward with their children and enrolling them in our School. For such children, PERKATA provides chances to achieve greater personal independence and social skills.

The school welcomes visitors and also volunteers who offer help and support. If you can spare us some of your time or expertise, please contact the Principal, Ms. Doreen Tie at 082-426301 during office hours.
